Buffalo Bills break several NFL, franchise records during Week 11 win over New York Jets

For the first time in more than a month, the Buffalo Bills gave fans something to really cheer about as they beat the New York Jets easily on Sunday afternoon. But the cheering goes beyond the 32-6 score, it’s for the new life that was breathed into the 2023 season and all that could be.

As a testament to how good the Bills have been — despite the six-week detour that had more twists, turns, and bumps than a country road — here are a few significant accomplishments (and some that are worth keeping an eye on over the next month).

Buffalo Bills’ defense played lights out

Despite missing three of their starters from Week 1, the Bills were able to send the Jets’ offense back to the bench often. The Jets were unable to convert a single third down. That’s right, they were 0-for-11 on third down. As noted in the team’s tweet, embedded below — the last time a Buffalo Bills team held its opponent without a third-down conversion was 12/13/1987 — last century, just under 36 years ago. That’s more than a generation, folks.

Quarterback Josh Allen set a new all-time record

With his three touchdowns Sunday, Allen took over as leader for the most offensive touchdowns in a player’s first season. Allen is now at 206 touchdowns (160 passing, 45 rushing, 1 receiving) since he entered the league in 2018, passing quarterback Patrick Mahomes (204). With six games left to play this season, there’s plenty of reason to be excited about how far out of reach he can move that bar — after all, the guy in third, at 199, is Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino.

Josh Allen also set a Bills team record

Allen entered the game in a tie with Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, each having thrown a touchdown in 18 consecutive games. On Sunday, Allen threw three, extending his game-streak to 19, thus passing Kelly and gaining sole possession of the team record.

And... Josh Allen leads the NFL in TD passes this season

Buffalo’s offense has looked like it’s misfiring more times than we want to go back and count this season. But Allen still leads the NFL in touchdown passes (22) — which is why the Bills haven’t lost a game by more than six points this season.

Head coach Sean McDermott moved up the Bills’ all-time win list

With the win, head coach Sean McDermott moved into a tie for second place on the team’s all-time win list. McDermott is now tied with Lou Saban but still trails Marv Levy by 44. Will McDermott stay in Buffalo for another four or five years and challenge Levy’s record?

Tight end Dalton Kincaid climbed Bills’ record book ranks

The rookie tight end caught six passes on Sunday afternoon, giving him a total of 51 on the season (and his career). Kincaid is now third in the Bills’ record books for passes caught by a rookie. Kincaid trails running back Joe Cribbs (60 in 1980) and wide receiver Sammy Watkins (65 in 2014). With two receptions a game for the rest of the season, Kincaid could tie Watkins. But who likes ties?

He also has the 12th-most receptions by a rookie tight end... ever. He trails Keith Jackson by 30, and with an average of five receptions a game for the remainder of the season, he could steal this record as well.

Wide receiver Khalil Shakir leads NFL with longest TD catch in 2023

With his 81-yard touchdown catch (yes, a huge chunk of that was in yards after catch — something Buffalo has been missing the last two seasons), Khalil Shakir has the longest touchdown catch in the league this season. As an added bonus, Shakir, who is in his second year in the NFL, recorded the first 100-yard game of his career (3 catches for 115 yards). He was also only the second receiver to score a touchdown on the Jets this season. Who was the first? Wide receiver Stefon Diggs in Week 1, of course.

Defensive tackle Ed Oliver sets new personal record

Ed Oliver signed a contract extension prior to the regular season, and he’s still playing like he has a contract to earn. With another sack last night, Oliver set a new personal best for sacks in a single season stretching his mark to six.

Edge rusher Leonard Floyd earned his spot in the team’s record books

Floyd is in his first season with the Buffalo Bills and is already writing his name into the team’s history books. With 2.5 sacks on Sunday, Floyd extended his season total to 9.5 and joined defensive tackle Jordan Phillips at the top of the list of “most sacks by a Buffalo Bills player in a season since 2017.”

Cornerback Rasul Douglas made himself at home

In just his third game with the Buffalo Bills, Douglas became the first Bills defender since safety Kurt Schultz in 1998 to record two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the same game.

Bills’ defense solidified themselves as a very respectable unit

Despite losing two All-Pros in cornerback Tre’Davious White and linebacker Matt Milano, as well as DaQuan Jones all before Week 6 of this season, the Bills have continued to field a dominant defense. Buffalo’s defense has the second-most sacks of any team this season.

Buffalo Bills’ offense proved to be legit as well

Despite receiving a lot of criticism over the past month and getting a new offensive coordinator just six days before the Week 11 game, Josh Allen and company were able to put up 32 points against a top-tier defense. The 32 points scored by the Bills on Sunday is the most points any team has scored against the New York Jets since Week 13 of the 2021 season.

There’s still a lot of football to be played this season, but that just means there are a lot more opportunities for One Bills Drive to give Bills Mafia something to cheer about.
