DE A.J. Epenesa and S Micah Hyde ruled out ahead of Bills vs. Cowboys

The good news is that both CB Taron Johnson and TE Dalton Kincaid have no game-day designations.

Before Friday’s practice even began, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott ruled both safety Micah Hyde and defensive end A.J. Epenesa out for Sunday’s game with the Dallas Cowboys.

Neither Hyde nor Epenesa have practiced this week as they are both dealing with injuries sustained in the Bills’ 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs last week. On Monday, McDermott had said that both would be considered week-to-week as they dealt with their injuries — ribs for Epenesa and yet another stinger, his third of the season (or more likely a continuation of the same) for Hyde — so the news wasn’t unexpected.

Today, however, McDermott again said that moving either or both of them to Injured Reserve wasn’t out of the question yet. With just four games left, in order to get them back for the playoffs, any such move would have to happen before game time (4:25 p.m. EST) on Sunday. It could be assumed that any such move would only happen if McDermott felt he needed to activate someone else — like cornerback Kaiir Elam who has ten more days before his 21-day practice window will close.

Tight end Dalton Kincaid remained in the red no-contact jersey at Friday’s practice as he works through a shoulder injury. However, the rookie who has proven himself an integral part of the Buffalo offense this season, catching 61 passes for 495 yards and two touchdowns, has not been ruled out for Sunday (Stats courtesy of Pro Football Reference).

Taron Johnson was also limited in practice with an ankle injury but, as has been the case every time Johnson has appeared on the injury report this season, he’s ready for game time.

In fact the only other players with game-day designations are Elam and wide receiver Justin Shorter — both of whom are technically still on Injured Reserve (IR).

On the other side of the field, the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys have ruled out defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins due to an ankle injury he suffered in the team’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

Additionally, Brandin Cooks, Stephon Gilmore, and Jalen Tolbert are questionable as they are still battling an illness that has been working its way around the Cowboys’ locker room. As of now, only linebacker Micah Parsons seems to have fully recovered from the illness. The other two names with game-day designations — Viliami Fehoko Jr. and Matt Waletzko - are still on the IR. Whether they play will depend on if the Cowboys can find room for them on their 53-man roster before Sunday.

As always, teams have until 90 minutes before kickoff to announce their game-day roster and inactives, so unless Buffalo moves Hyde and/or Epenesa or either team announces roster moves to make room for activating players, we will have to wait until 2:55 p.m. EST on Sunday to know anything more.
