Josh Allen’s MVP-level season overshadowed by Buffalo Bills’ subpar record

Allen’s numbers are fantastic, but the Bills are only a .500 team right now

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is a bona fide NFL superstar and his numbers thus far in the 2023 season back that up. Despite that, the Bills are currently 6-6, in grave danger of missing the NFL playoffs. While wins most certainly should not be a QB stat, the team’s record isn’t the type of ingredient called for in a quarterback’s race (or anyone, for that matter) to be an NFL MVP. If Buffalo had a better record would Allen’s stats through 12 weeks have him as the MVP favorite? Let’s take a look at how he stacks up.

Current betting favorites for NFL MVP

Josh Allen currently has the 10-best odds to win NFL MVP according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Here are the top-11 odds:

  • Jalen Hurts +140
  • Lamar Jackson +350
  • Patrick Mahomes +350
  • Tua Tagovailoa +700
  • Dak Prescott +900
  • Christian McCaffrey (16/1)
  • C.J. Stroud (17/1)
  • Brock Purdy (17/1)
  • Trevor Lawrence (28/1)
  • Josh Allen (30/1)
  • Tyreek Hill (40/1)

Given Buffalo’s current record, it’s hard to argue with these odds. It’s actually kind of impressive that Allen still is in the top 10, which shows just how good of a season he’s having.

In summary

In reality, Allen likely won’t get a sniff for MVP in 2023 unless the Buffalo Bills rattle off a winning streak to end the season and Allen leads the charge. Even then, other suitors are having great seasons (Hurts, Prescott, Mahomes, Jackson), and it will be tough for Allen to jump another QB from a top-seeded team. Regardless, Allen is having a fantastic season (besides his INTs) and Bills Mafia should be thrilled to have one of the best QBs in the league. Now the Bills just need to start winning some games.
