The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams square off tonight on the NFL’s biggest stage of Sunday Night Football. Tonight’s matchup is loaded with story lines, most of all the Lions hosting their first playoff game in three decades. Beyond that, there’s added intrigue with quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff set to duel. In March of 2021, Stafford and Goff were the blue chips that consummated a mega trade between their respective franchises.
Stafford spent the first 12 years of his NFL career in Detroit, while Goff began life in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams. Goff, still only 29 years old, played in a Super Bowl with LA, but quickly fell out of favor — and has since found a rebirth of sorts thanks to the Lions. Stafford won a Super Bowl ring, but not until he left the Motor City for Hollywood.
How will the night play out for this pair of quarterbacks set to face off against their old teams? Here’s your open thread to discuss and ride out Sunday night with a quality football nightcap.

Los Angeles Rams at Detroit Lions, 8 p.m. EST, (NBC)
As the (6) Los Angeles Rams (9-8) and the (3) Detroit Lions (12-5) gear up for Sunday Night Football during the first weekend of playoff games, there’s no shortage of excitement surrounding this matchup. Both teams have had their fair share of highs and lows throughout the season, making this game one that is sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
The Lions enter tonight at -3 according to DraftKings Sportsbook, while the over/under total sits at 53, and a Moneyline of -155 for the Lions and +130 for the Rams.
The Los Angeles Rams started off the season slowly, but not for lack of roster talent. Injuries plagued the team, with star wide receiver Cooper Kupp being sidelined for several weeks. However, once Kupp returned and running back Kyren Williams hit his stride, the Rams’ offense took off. Rookie wide receiver Puka Nacua also made a significant impact, breaking both the receptions and receiving yards NFL records. Despite their struggles, the Rams managed to clinch a playoff spot with four straight wins to close out the season.
On the other side, the Detroit Lions have been a force to be reckoned with all season. The passion and love that the team displays been truly inspiring, and it’s clear that they refuse to back down in the face of adversity. Their offensive line has been dominant, paving the way for running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs to flourish. Quarterback Jared Goff has also had an impressive year, forming a strong connection with wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown that resulted in 10 touchdowns and 1,515 yards on the year.
In terms of defenses, the Rams have struggled this season, which comes as a surprise considering the presence of defensive tackle Aaron Donald, one of the most dominant defensive players in the league. On the other hand, the Lions have been stout against the run, giving up the league’s second-fewest (1,509) rushing yards for the year. However, they have struggled against the pass, allowing 4,562 passing yards — the fourth-worst in the NFL. It will be interesting to see how both teams attempt to exploit each other’s weaknesses in the passing game.
Looking ahead to the upcoming matchup, it’s clear that both teams have the potential to come out on top. However, it’s my prediction that the Lions will handle business and emerge victorious. Their resilience and strength throughout the season have been impressive, and I believe they will rise to the occasion in this crucial playoff game.
I expect a shootout, with the Lions ultimately coming out on top: 36-33, Lions over Rams.
