Buffalo Bills training camp is right around the corner, and as part of the lead-in to the first major football event of the 2013 season, we're going to be running final off-season approval polls on the team's three most important front office figures: Russ Brandon, Doug Whaley and Doug Marrone.
Brandon's poll is off and running, so let's turn our attention next to Whaley, who was named the successor at GM (following Buddy Nix) on May 16, garnering a 91 percent approval rating on that day. Since then, here are a few stories Whaley has been involved with:
- The Bills released Tarvaris Jackson prior to their final spring mini-camp, narrowing down the starting competition to veteran Kevin Kolb and rookie EJ Manuel.
- Kicked the tires on a few street free agents, signing one (Doug Legursky) to potentially compete for a starting job. (The other two: Montell Owens and Tyronne Green.)
- Told BuffaloBills.com that he believes second-year cornerback Stephon Gilmore has "made a leap" heading into the 2013 season.
- The Jairus Byrd contract impasse continues, though there may be reason to doubt exactly how involved Whaley is in the negotiating process:
Many folks mentioning Doug Whaley re: Byrd negotiations. For record, negotiator is Jim Overdorf, who reports to Russ Brandon, not Whaley.
