James Staas of The Buffalo News reports that Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Marcell Dareus was arrested last Friday and charged with seven separate traffic offenses, three of which are misdemeanors.
The charges are believed to be connected to a car race, per Staas' sources. They include reckless endangerment, a Class A misdemeanor that could lead to significant jail time if convicted, as well as reckless driving, participation in an illegal speed contest, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. He was issued an appearance ticket for Hamburg Town Court, per Staas.
Dareus was arrested last Friday afternoon, just two days after talking to reporters about an early-May arrest that have him facing felony drug possession charges.
I’m not a trouble guy," Dareus told reporters last week. "I don’t cause any problems nowhere. I’m not a loud guy, I don’t do anything. I just have fun and be myself. Things happen. Things happen."
"I feel like I’m on the straight and narrow," Dareus continued last Wednesday. "All I’m going to have to do is just... things happen. Young, dumb. You’ve got to correct it and just move forward."
Dareus was also suspended for a total of three quarters in the team's final two games of the 2013 season for being late to meetings. Despite those concerns, and two weeks before the drug-related arrest, the Bills picked up the fifth-year option on Dareus' rookie contract.
