Sammy Watkins suffers rib injury in Bills vs. Steelers preseason game

Buffalo's top draft pick left Saturday's preseason game early with a rib injury.

Sammy Watkins exited Saturday night's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a rib injury.

The injury occurred on the Buffalo Bills' opening drive of the game. On a slant on the right side of the formation, Watkins had his facemask grabbed, his body twisted around as a result, and a Steelers defender grazed him in the back. Watkins appeared to grab at his left side, then quickly hobbled off the field of play.

After being checked out by trainers for a few moments on the sideline, Watkins was escorted into the locker room, after which his rib injury was disclosed. He walked off the field in both instances under his own power.

Watkins started, of course, alongside Mike Williams with the first-team offense. Chris Hogan was serving as the slot receiver with the top unit once again, so Watkins was replaced in the starting lineup by second-year pro Robert Woods.
