Rex Ryan, Buffalo Bills will pick a starting QB on Sunday

New, comments

Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills are ready to decide on a starting quarterback - but he is not ready to tell us who it's going to be, apparently.

After his top three quarterbacks tore through a bad Pittsburgh Steelers defense with reckless abandon on Saturday afternoon, Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan told reporters that he expects all three will sit out the team's preseason finale next weekend, with Matt Simms playing the entire game.

Oh, and Ryan also told reporters that he's going to decide on Buffalo's starting quarterback for the 2015 season tomorrow - but that he won't announce the decision to the general public.

Combine both of those pieces of information, and Ryan has set himself up to guard the identity of his starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, and perhaps even until kickoff in Week 1 against Indianapolis. The only potential indicator of a decision, unless Ryan lets the cat out of the bag, would be practice reps - but during the regular season, reporters are often not permitted to stay long enough into practice sessions to even see those reps begin.

While we await knowledge of the decision, all three of Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor, and EJ Manuel showed well in their final preseason audition against Pittsburgh. Manuel and Taylor were far more impressive than Cassel, but if you add up the production of all four quarterbacks (including Simms), the group completed 30-of-33 passes for 395 yards with four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).
