Bills fans are back on the horse.

A win is a win it would seem, or at least in terms of Buffalo Bills fan confidence it is true. After losses dropped the percentage of Bills fans happy about the direction of their team from 100% to 71%, a win over the New York Jets raised it back up to 92%. Not everyone was convinced, but the majority of folks who were concerned seem to be back.

Around the league, fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans are both at 100% fan confidence to lead the league. Jacksonville Jaguars fans are at 0% fan confidence to bottom out, just ahead of the 2% Dallas Cowboys.

In the AFC East, New England Patriots fans are at just 25% after a huge home loss and the New York Jets went UP to 19% after losing to the Bills. The Miami Dolphins dropped from 95% to 85% over their bye after choosing to go to the rookie Tua Tagovailoa over Ryan Fitzpatrick.

A win over the Patriots would go a long way toward winning the AFC East and solidifying Bills fans’ confidence.

The rookie made a couple splash plays in (very) limited action

It’s no secret that the Buffalo Bills have been looking to get a bit more out of their defense in recent weeks. To that end they’ve made some tweaks here and there to try and find the best lineups and strategy. One of the more fluid situations is rookie A.J. Epenesa, who has seen fluctuations in playing time as the Bills try to sort it out. A couple of splash plays against the New York Jets had him stand out. Especially when he was only in for nine total. Let’s see how his day went by looking at every single play he participated in.

Play 1

A.J. Epenesa’s first play probably could have gone better. He doesn’t realize the block is coming from his side and he’s taken out of the play quickly and easily. As a note, eight of Epenesa’s nine snaps came in the first quarter. He had a single snap in the third. These plays are all in chronological order if you want to backtrack the play-by-play.

Play 2

This is better but still not good. I don’t fault him for moving left, but I do think he was being pushed more than I’d like and he doesn’t see Dean Marlowe coming across. Neither does A.J. Klein for the record as Marlowe becomes the first player in NFL history to collide with two teammates named “A.J.” on the same play. That fact is probably true.

Play 3

A good chunk of Epenesa’s power and leverage woes appear to be stance related and he’s better here. He still gets shoved around a bit as he turns his body. At the end of the play he’s more falling than deliberately joining in on the tackle fun.

Play 4

This is the sack he shared with Trent Murphy and while they both deserve credit for the play, it’s also true that perhaps the Jets could have done a little more to stop either player. Like...anything at all. The Jets’ offensive line is truly offensive on this play. Again, give Epenesa credit but this wasn’t his best play of the day. What I mean is that while it’s an impact play, it doesn’t highlight any skill effectively.

Play 5

Please note, nine snaps is hardly a great sample size. However, combining the evidence from all nine, plus my impressions of watching college tape on Epenesa (here) leads me to the conclusion he struggles with his power game. He doesn’t get good push here. While it is against a double team, he has room to gain a head of steam and there’s no ambiguity about which side of this won.

Play 6

Here’s more evidence that his power game needs work. At the end of the play he’s once again shoved out of the way. However, on the way there he shows off the one facet of his game that still has me excited about his ceiling. A.J. Epenesa reflexively pops up Mekhi Becton’s left arm, freeing himself from the block quite cleanly. The reaction time and technique would be something I’d point out for a veteran, let alone a rookie. Hand fighting is all about timing and reflexes, which, in my opinion, are harder to improve than things like stance and leverage.

Play 7

Once again Epenesa is overpowered. This time by one hand. He recovers well enough and tracks the play nicely but you also have to note that Becton looks away from Epenesa at a critical moment. If Becton had kept his eyes forward there’s a good chance he can stop Epenesa a second time.

Play 8

Here’s A.J. Epenesa’s best play in my opinion. He’s (yet again) rocked by a shove but he (yet again) reflexively uses a subtle finesse technique. While lurching from the initial contact, Epenesa still manages to rip with his left arm and slip through the gap by “shrinking” courtesy of turning his body.

Play 9

And here’s Epenesa’s second best. The swat from the right hand to clear Becton’s hands is...

Well it’s pretty damn good. It allows him to get around rapidly and is nearly able to make a huge play. If Darnold hadn’t gotten this one out fast it’s likely a disaster for the Jets.

Summary

It’s only nine snaps so the following very judgmental things apply only to this game, mind you, but A.J. Epenesa had a so-so day. His splash-play sack was more a failure by the Jets than anything amazing from Epenesa. Overall, I think there’s still a ways to go when it comes to leverage and power. On the other hand (pun intended), he flashes high-level reflexes and hand fighting.

For now I’ll stick with my impressions of Epenesa based on reviewed college film. He makes the hard stuff look easy and the easy stuff look hard. If I had to choose the thing to have to work on with a raw player, he’s on the right side of it. For that reason I think it’s fair to be excited to give him his chance in the league.

Ready for GIFs? Is your browser ready? We’ve got a lot.

Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes has created a bit of a rift among some of us the last few years. The lack of measurable impact has left many frustrated. But many fans like myself swear he’s still playing at a high level. We can go back to debating next week. For now I think it’s safe to say we all agree he had a great day against the New York Jets.
One reason that Jerry Hughes doesn’t always light up the stat sheet is that there’s always a handful of plays that are hard to quantify. Sometimes you just gotta sit back and enjoy. The play was too long to get in one GIF but the pass is incomplete. A major reason is that Hughes is helping cover the side Darnold wants to go to. In order to get to the other side of the field he had to travel there. By that time the Bills’ back end has already figured it out.

They’re not wrong. My only disagreement is that I don’t think it should all be on Hughes. He’s shown exceptional ability to play the edges and juggle the QB/RB conundrum for so long I think he’s earned the benefit of the doubt. He shows it again here.

Another reason Hughes misses some stats is the attention opponents pay him. The double team on Hughes leaves a big gap for Tremaine Edmunds to shoot. A nice stop from La’Mical Perine avoids the hit from Edmunds but sends him back Quinton Jefferson’s way.
I want to stop for a minute and dive into this one. The Jets have decided to double team Jerry Hughes. That happened a good deal but look closer. Nope. A little closer. Alright that’s good. Do you see it? They’re not just double teaming Hughes. They’re double teaming him with two tight ends. And the running back is staying home to help block. That leaves Sam Darnold with only two possible targets. The Bills’ defense comes screaming at Darnold on Hughes’s side with zero consequence as a result.

The Jets have gone all-in on blocking Hughes to the point where they’ve sacrificed half of the field to stop him. The Bills blitz and beat them with the numbers game on Hughes’s side. What if this wasn’t a blitz? A four-man rush would have left seven Bills in coverage vs. two Jets receivers.

Hughes knows he has Taron Johnson coming in off the edge and shadows Darnold. There’s some subtle beauty in this play in addition to the forced fumble of course.
This is the third-to-last play by the Jets and George Fant looks frustrated. Hughes isn’t unbeatable by any means and if a tackle is going to be blatant about playing outside the scope of the rules it does make it easier to get this done. Hughes does legitimately lose a battle here and there too. Not this play though. The obvious call set the Jets back ten yards. In a one-score game and on your last-gasp drive this is huge.

Summary

The plays above represent more than a third of his time on the field and overall they go way beyond “good” snaps. That said, and acknowledging I’m one of the biggest Jerry Hughes fans there is, even I’ll admit that not every game has this level of dominance. Though, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t sit back and bask in the glory of it all when it happens.

Furthermore, what this game does show is that Hughes has a lot left in the tank. His hand fighting, change of direction, spin moves, and football IQ all easily show up on tape. You can argue inferior competition for sure, but the athleticism on display speaks for itself. Enjoy watching Hughes this year Bills fans. He hasn’t found a cliff just yet.

Wooo!

Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week after his thrashing of right tackle George Fant and the New York Jets on Sunday. He finished the game with two sacks, a forced fumble, and a game-clinching interception in addition to five tackles. He also drew at least one holding flag and disrupted Jets QB Sam Darnold in the backfield throughout the second half.

Sunday was the ninth career two-sack game for Hughes but his first since 2017. It was his first NFL interception.

Buffalo’s defense allowed just four yards from the Jets’ offense in the second half. They sacked Darnold six times during the game.

Cornerback Tre’Davious White is the last Bills defender to earn the award. He had two interceptions against the Duck Hodges-led Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football last December. He also earned the award in Week 5 of 2019.

Hughes had received some criticism from fans for not finding the stat sheet this season, but he’s been solid winning one-on-one matchups all year. It was nice to see him finally get on the stat sheet to quiet the critics.

But is it a storybook season?

Seven weeks into the 2020 season, what are the Buffalo Bills?

The question is harder to answer than it was three weeks ago; back before the Bills lost back-to-back games to the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs and their offense stalled out on better than eight drives against the New York Jets. Back then the Bills were the darlings of the AFC and Josh Allen was an MVP candidate. So much can change in a few short weeks in the NFL.

Are the Bills still an offensive juggernaut? Did the defense find itself after their domination of the New York Jets? Is Josh Allen an “elite” NFL quarterback? Are head coach Sean McDermott, defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll all exceptional at their jobs? All these are answers found only in the eye of the beholder. Whatever you think the Bills are (or aren’t) is reasonably backed up at this point in time with plenty of items in both the pros and cons columns of the team’s identity.

The Bills have a schedule that will shed light on these answers in definitive ways with games against the likes of the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers still to come. In the meantime, whatever you think about the 2020 Buffalo Bills, good or bad, can probably be justified with what they’ve put on the field so far.

Epenesa gets noticed and Dane Jackson has a strong debut

The Buffalo Bills were somewhat able to get back on track in an 18-10 win against the New York Jets this past Sunday. It was an overall abnormal game that saw no touchdowns and also zero punts for the visiting team, while the home team could only manage four yards of offense in the entire second half. The positive news, at least when it comes to our purposes, is that most of the rookie class had a hand in why the Bills eventually came out on top. More about how each rookie performed against the Jets below.

DE A.J. Epenesa

The team’s second-round pick has had a tough go of it the past few weeks, but finally made himself noticed against the Jets. In the first quarter, lined up against fellow rookie Mekhi Becton, Epenesa pulled an inside rush just as the tackle was taking an outside set and essentially had a free path to the quarterback. That would have earned Epenesa his first full sack of the year if Trent Murphy hadn’t also been involved. Then later in the first quarter, Epenesa got small and used his speed to beat Becton again on a stretch run, tackling Frank Gore for a loss. That’s effective play from a non-starting edge rusher.

RB Zack Moss

It was the rookie’s best day in a Buffalo Bills uniform, as he found success on both the ground and in the passing game, demonstrating what he can be for this team. The offensive line was finally able to bust open decent holes for him, which allowed Moss to take advantage of his physical, downhill running style to gain extra yards. He proved to be just as tough to bring down in the passing game, taking what was a simple dump off and turning it into a 17-yard gain thanks to a forced broken tackle. Moss finished with 72 total yards from scrimmage.

WR Gabriel Davis

The primary beneficiary of John Brown’s extended absence, Davis was targeted a handful of times by Josh Allen on extended plays but was typically covered up by defensive backs. His only catch of the game came on a short timing route that took advantage of the Jets playing soft underneath coverage.

QB Jake Fromm

As with the previous games, Fromm was again a healthy scratch. This should remain the case throughout the season.

K Tyler Bass

Bass was the sole producer of points in the game, and for that he should be commended. In attempting to make eight field goals, he missed two “easier” kicks of 37 and 45 yards, while successfully making a much more difficult kick of 52 yards. You still feel like you never know what’s going to happen when he lines up, but he certainly got a lot of practice against the Jets.

WR Isaiah Hodgins

Hodgins remains on Injured Reserve due to a shoulder injury sustained late in training camp.

CB Dane Jackson

The player who probably had the most pressure to play well, Jackson not only held his own in the game, but came down with two massive plays that shut down two separate New York drives. The first came in the Jets’ opening drive in the red zone on 3rd-and-4: as Darnold was scrambling to find an open receiver, Jackson stayed patient, read the quarterback’s eyes and stuck out his hand, breaking up the intended pass. Then in the second quarter, Jackson once again read Darnold’s eyes and kept dropping into a deeper and deeper zone, until he found himself in perfect position to intercept a desperation throw. Those two plays together helped change the complexion of the game.

TE/FB Reggie Gilliam

On the field much more than usual thanks to most of the rest of his position group being in quarantine, the hybrid player was targeted once and managed to come down with a 15-yard dump-off pass thanks to some soft zone coverage from the Jets. Per usual, he resumed his role on special teams.
