All the info inside

New York State, Erie County, and the Buffalo Bills announced in September that all guests at Highmark Stadium would need to present proof of vaccination to enter events. While the enforcement was spotty at best, and the vaccine mandate has been lifted, at least one couple was charged with violating the rules following the Bills’ Wild Card win over the New England Patriots.

Amber and Michael Naab of West Seneca were arraigned in late January in Orchard Park Town Court. On Tuesday they pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, according to Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn.

Each were initially charged with one count of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree. That charge is a Class D felony, which carries a maximum seven-year prison sentence, but Flynn said all along he wasn’t going to send them to prison.

Orchard Park Town Justice Jorge S. DeRosas’s punishment fell well short of jail time. Each were granted conditional discharges and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. They needed to pay a $125 fine plus a $125 surcharge.

The pair also cannot attend games at Highmark Stadium. When the new stadium is built, they can’t buy season tickets.

Both Naabs were on the team’s radar, per the district attorney in January, because they had previously posted on social media about using fake vaccination cards to enter the game. Flynn said the pair allegedly obtained a blank Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine card, filled in their names and date of birth, entered a fake Pfizer lot number, and put down that they were vaccinated at a local CVS pharmacy.

During the third quarter of the Wild Card game, the couple was approached in their seats by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and members of the team. After questioning, the team elected to prosecute.

“It’s a slap in the face to the 70,000 others who did the right thing,” Flynn said in January, while noting he’s sure they aren’t the only people who attended the game with a forgery. “I hate to be the guy that says ‘I need to send a message.’ I don’t like being that guy, but you can’t do this. There’s a law, we got laws on the books.”

The Kansas City gadget man under the microscope

It’s the NFL Playoffs, where getting hot at the right time can be critical. One way to do that is to add new wrinkles into the playbook. Or, in some cases, showcase unexpected players. Enter Kansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon. Seeing 12 rushing attempts and 20 receiving targets in the regular season, McKinnon was essentially a non-factor. Against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round, McKinnon hit a season high 78% of snaps. He matched his regular-season carry total of 12, and had six targets to boot for 18 total touches and 142 yards (30% of the team’s total). With little tape on McKinnon and recent success, the Buffalo Bills now have one more player to prepare for. So we are too.

Play 1

I really like the play design here. Jerick McKinnon looks like this is a pretty straightforward safety valve-type route for a running back. As the key “block” slide alludes to, this a pretty devious way to set up a lead blocker. McKinnon isn’t a safety valve, he looks like the primary read. Good play design. Good execution.

Play 2

I may say something that sounds like I’m disparaging Jerick McKinnon but that’s not the goal. I’ll start off this play by saying any running back getting hit like this isn’t likely to take it to the house, if you catch my drift. There are some backs who would struggle to even fall forward like McKinnon does. That said, he isn’t moving a pile here or anywhere else I saw.

Play 3

Isaiah McKenzie fans will recognize this play. This single one gives opponents several wrinkles to prepare for. Will McKinnon get a direct snap? Will it be a quick pass/hand off in front of Mahomes? Will it be a quick swing pass? Or something unrelated to McKinnon like we see here?

Play 4

It seems pretty clear the play call here includes McKinnon in the read progressions. There’s a quick bump from T.J. Watt, which McKinnon needs to adjust to and he does admirably. This isn’t spectacular but there’s a lot of little things that go well, including McKinnon’s execution.

Play 5

Unconventional and intentional about it. This is not me saying anything remotely like “Only Patrick Mahomes can make that throw.” I mean ****, I can physically make that throw. Rather, I’m highlighting the fact that Kansas City isn’t afraid to go “wacky” if they think it’ll be effective. Having to prepare for the “usual” football stuff plus some “wacky” to go with it can create headaches.

Play 6

Coming back to Jerick McKinnon specifically, he’s a good back from what I can see. He recognizes the lane shutting down, changes direction, and hits the accelerator. There’s a broken tackle in there for good measure. There’s a lot of this play that’s all McKinnon.

Play 7

And finally we have a cautionary tale. Any NFL player on offense will proooooobably do well if the defense has temporary amnesia regarding their existence. This wasn’t a regular thing against Pittsburgh but this is partially what I think KC is going for. Jerick McWho?

Summary

It’s true that Jerick McKinnon had a breakout game against Pittsburgh. It’s also true there’s a reason he’s on his third team in his six-year career and averages three starts per season. We’re not talking Jonathan Taylor or Derrick Henry. Again, I’m not trying to be insulting to McKinnon. He’s a good player, with some versatility and talent to be used in a wide variety of situations. The surrounding talent including the coaching staff are of course the bigger threat.

With the emergence of the offensive line, let’s look at the man in the middle

The Buffalo Bills put together a flawless offensive performance taking down the New England Patriots. The surging offensive line has been heralded for the return of Devin Singletary and a newly balanced offense that could be well-nigh unstoppable. At the center of a lot of the discussion (literally and figuratively) is veteran Mitch Morse. Let’s take a gander at the part he played in one of the most dominant victories we’ve ever seen.

Play 1

The ability for linemen to work together is perhaps the most important trait for success. Right out of the gate we see a block successfully passed by Mitch Morse to Ryan “Rick” Bates. Because the block was passed well, the original defender is no threat to Josh Allen AND Morse is free to take on a second block.

Play 2

You’ll likely notice that these plays show off more than Mitch Morse, though he’s the center of our attention. Morse holds his initial block, then turns and pushes into the pile. That contributes to a large pileup where the Patriots’ overload is nowhere near as effective as they’d like. It creates enough pressure to flush Allen left, but the wall created by Buffalo makes it hard to pursue.

Play 3

The Bills have been using a healthy dose of pulling blockers. Morse and Spencer Brown both pull to the left (our right). Morse is on a block right away. More importantly, as he hits his man he uses the contact to pivot and seal off the lane completely. It’s hard to do it better than this.

Play 4

While centers are often tasked with helping the guards, there are bound to be some one-on-one battles. Mitch Morse usually handles these pretty well. The side-to-side dance should be considered a solid Morse victory.

Play 5

I don’t have data to verify this, but compared to past versions of the Bills’ running game this feels different. I’ve called out instances where they bunched up the formation and relied on brute force that I’ve suggested is not a strength of well... anyone on the line really. This run is more like their passing designs with gaps between linemen and the skill-position players. This play illustrates why I prefer this to the brute-force style. Mitch Morse is fast and can execute this at a much higher level. Look above to Play 3 where Spencer Brown also shows off some speed.

Summary

I’ve done a couple Mitch Morse pieces and without a doubt he’s a player I love seeing play for the Buffalo Bills. That doesn’t mean flawless though. The line has had their warts, and were even blasted through much of the season. They’ve overcome those issues in some part by changing the cast. Ryan Bates seems to be settling in nicely. More importantly (in my opinion) though is a shift toward emphasizing team strengths. A glaring example is playing Devin Singletary as the feature back, allowing him to work into a groove. Having players like Mitch Morse work with zone blocking and pin-and-pull schemes (see below) and using their speed to their full advantage also seems to be paying dividends. I don’t see a massive influx of talent all of a sudden. Rather they’ve begun leaning on the talent that was already there.

Super BOWL performance?

The hosts aren’t excited, you’re excited! Ok, fine, Jamie D’Amico and Big Chris Newton are beyond enthused after the Buffalo Bills spanked the New England Patriots in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.

Newton believes that if Josh Allen plays to 85% of what he did against the Patriots, the Bills will win the Super Bowl.

D’Amico and Newton review the gaudy statistics that the Bills, and in particular Josh Allen, put up during the game, and then discuss what has changed on the offensive line to allow the offense to shine. Not only were the Patriots held without a sack, but the running game wasn’t stopped for a loss on any play.

But where does this win rank in team history? Jamie D and Big Newt disagree with each other about the gravity of the victory.

They then turn their attention to the upcoming game and the Kansas City Chiefs by comparing position groups to see who has the advantage.

In the latest episode of BBR, I am joined by Joe Marino—the esteemed host of the Locked on Bills podcast. We spend some time discussing the Buffalo Bills’ 47-17 victory over the New England Patriots, and expectations of the Divisional Round matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Joe also provides an update on his new book, appropriately titled Go Bills, that will be finished following the season. You can find more information here on his latest endeavor. You can listen to the episode below, and share your thoughts in the comments section on Saturday night’s victory.
