Monday mornings after Bills losses are all about adding context to the misery. Here's what stood out to us from Buffalo's 26-24 loss to Oakland.

The Buffalo Bills lost to the Oakland Raiders a week after beating the Green Bay Packers, because fate is scripted, and the Bills' scripts are written by very cruel football gods.

Or, you know, they just played like crap a week after playing great. One of those.

Either way, their shot at the playoffs is now gone, and we have one game left (plus a week to get there) before transitioning fully into offseason mode. Let's do a bit of both - talk about the game and the future, that is - with these five observations from yesterday's 26-24 loss.

No. 1: We've spoken before about the Bills' offense completely losing its identity during the past two seasons, and will continue to do so for the next several months. The up-tempo elements are completely gone, as is the team's run-heavy approach. That dramatic shift can't entirely be placed on the quarterback position; indeed, that occurred largely because the team's offensive line has regressed so noticeably from year to year. These guys stink, and you don't need to read between the lines of Doug Marrone's post-game quotes yesterday to get that the Bills realize it, too. It has gotten to the point for me where I won't be shocked or dismayed if they try to address things at all five positions up front. They are brutal to watch.

No. 2: I don't think you'd get much of an argument to the statement that the Bills, in general, have very good skill talent, particularly at running back and wide receiver. Here's the thing, though: there are only six positions on the field for every single offensive snap, and those are the five linemen and the quarterback. Those are the six worst positions in Buffalo's offense right now. That group was built completely backwards philosophically. Say what you want about the play-calling (49 passes for Kyle Orton is too many) and the in-game decision-making (another 4th and 1 punt near midfield), but these coaches are working with an offense that is flawed in its foundation, and that often forces their hand.

No. 3: Even forgetting about the battle in the trenches, which the Raiders won in thoroughly convincing fashion, Oakland just looked like they wanted it more than Buffalo. That was perfectly exemplified on big plays through the air - Charles Woodson outmuscling Scott Chandler for an early interception, Kenbrell Thompkins whistling past Aaron Williams to set up the Raiders' first score, and most especially, the Andre Holmes reception over Corey Graham that converted a 3rd and 22 late in the fourth quarter. Those were plays that the Bills needed to make or prevent against an inferior opponent, but the Raiders won them all. Chalk the loss up to whatever you like, but to me, the Raiders took the win from Buffalo on those types of plays.

No. 4: You know what else the Bills could really use? Better defensive line depth. The team has made a concerted effort this season to manage the snap counts of their starting defensive line - none of those four players has taken more than 72.9 percent of snaps - and that leaves a lot of plays on the field for middling to below-average players. Buffalo's first-team defense was its typical stout self defending the run early in yesterday's game, but when Marcell Dareus was lost for the game with a knee injury, the Raiders really started to take off on the ground. By the end of the day, they'd accumulated 140 rushing yards on 32 carries. Buffalo's defense is very good, but they still have some work to do in that department this offseason, and it starts with better depth up front.

No. 5: Not only did the Dareus injury hurt the Bills in dramatic fashion, but so did a early exit for top cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who had really come into his own and played at a high level of the last month or so. Buffalo has an opportunity to field one of the best cornerback tandems in football next season in Gilmore and Leodis McKelvin; in Oakland, however, they were left with the aforementioned Graham and Ron Brooks, who was picked on in Gilmore's absence and gave up several marginal gains on underneath throws. Gilmore has been beat up early and often in his three-year NFL career; his durability should be a talking point this offseason.

Might the Bills' season-ending loss to the Raiders on Sunday have actually been a blessing in disguise?

I know many of you were wondering where I have been over these past couple of months. A lot has transpired with the Buffalo Bills since my last post, so there definitely wasn't a shortage of topic ideas to discuss. And yes, things have been busy at the day job, and my soon to be one year-old daughter has been keeping me busy. But none of these were the real reasons why you haven't heard from me.

As I watched the finale of yesterday's loss to the Oakland Raiders, and the clock finally hit zero, ensuring that the season was over and the non-playoff streak would continue, I was inspired to write my first Morning Joe in months.

What happened?

The writers on this site all write for various reasons. I write for you; the fans. I felt that there was nothing of value for me to offer you over these past couple of months. Like many of you, I was on the emotional roller coaster that this team had us on during the season. There were many highs and lows, many ups and downs, and quite frankly where my emotions were, I was in no condition to adequately express my thoughts.

As a contributor on this site, I have an obligation and a responsibility to not just go on a thousand-word rant on why Doug Marrone should be fired. I should use this forum for something more productive. So for today's Morning Joe, I'm going give you, the fans, some perspective. Hopefully, once you read this, you will have the same level of peace that I had yesterday as it became clear that the season is over for the Bills.

As you begin to start your day, and you tune in to your favorite sports radio station, read an article about the Bills, or talk to your co-workers about the game and seasons, just take a moment to reflect on this season.

First off, we started the season with the passing of our Hall of Fame owner, Mr. Ralph Wilson. We inducted Andre Reed in to the Hall of Fame. Our Hall of Fame quarterback, Jim Kelly. was in a battle for his life, eventually beating cancer.

As we began the season, we had no owner, and no assurances that the team would stay in Western New York. In the midst of finding a new owner, things took an unexpected turn on the field. Our future quarterback was unceremoniously benched after just four starts, and a guy who was on the team for all of just four weeks was thrust in to the starting lineup.

Kyle Orton steadied the ship as things were starting to become clearer off the field. Kim and Terry Pegula purchased the team, and our fears of losing the Bills to Toronto, or any other big city, were gone.

As the Bills finished the first half of the season with a 5-3 record, things became crazy after the bye week. Two losses and a massive snow storm later, things were beginning to look bleak for the team and the city. On top of all of this, fans got word that fan-favorite Daryl Talley was experiencing medical problems due to his playing career.

In spite of a season filled with uncertainty, the Bills still managed to have one of its best seasons in years. The team fought hard and persevered late into the season.

But as the walls in the fieldhouse and in the locker rooms read, "Let's not confuse effort with results."

If you thought for one second that today's Morning Joe was going to take the stance of "hey guys, look what we overcame," I'm sorry, but you're sadly mistaken. There are no moral victories here. Those words are ringing in my ears, and they should be ringing in yours, too. Here is your promised perspective and peace.

I need for you take five minutes and have a conversation with yourself. It is now time for you to be reasonable and set your expectations. Did you really expect that this coach and quarterback combination was going to be good enough to head up a playoff team? You may have thought the defense was good enough, and perhaps the offense can do just enough to get them in, but you really couldn't believe a team who struggles to score touchdowns can actually be a legitimate playoff team, could you?

It was amazing to me, how the talk has always been about making the playoffs, but never about what they would have done if they actually got in, and what the ramifications of them getting in would have been.

This team, as it is currently constructed, is massively flawed - particularly on the offensive side of the ball. What we had with this team all season long was fool's gold. The team had the look of a playoff team on the outside with its dominating defense and timely plays, but on the inside they were a team that lacked capability at the quarterback position and an offensive philosophy that didn't complement its talent.

Folks, this has always been the case. We just confused effort with results.

The Raiders game yesterday was a blessing in disguise. If this team would have won that game and beat the New England Patriots next week and miraculously made the playoffs, the change that we all desire would not have come to fruition. I have no faith that the team would've adequately addressed the quarterback situation, and would have continued to trot out this sorry excuse of an offense next season. All while selling its fans and season ticket holders on the notion of continuity and staying the course. People innately don't fix something that doesn't seem broken; thus, the status quo. Trust me, fans: the Raiders did this team a favor by handing them this loss.

In summary, as you listen to management address the media in the coming weeks, and you hear buzzwords or phrases like culture, continuity, progress, and staying the course, just keep in mind that you're being sold an idea. They're trying to confuse effort with results. These things aren't tangible, and can't be measured. However, what can be measured is the 14-17 record that this team has had since this regime has taken over, or the bottom-dwelling offenses they have fielded over the last two seasons.

The root word of continuity is continue, and if management wants continuity, then we can't expect any changes.

If you're upset, don't be. Rest easy. Put all of this in its proper context. A 10-win season and a playoff berth might have meant an extension for Orton, another year of this crappy offense, and unattainable expectations for next season, causing us further heartache down the road. We just need to thank our lucky stars that this team was exposed. Maybe now, management can see what we all saw, and make the necessary changes going forward, and not feel obligated to "stay the course."

With the table set for a potentially monumental Week 17 showdown in New England, the Bills could not handle their own business on Sunday - and they've been eliminated from the playoffs.

If we were talking about a Buffalo Bills win over the Oakland Raiders right now, we'd be sugarcoating the details as an excited segue into a Week 17 showdown with New England - because the Bills got a lot of help around the league today, and would have had a legitimate shot at the postseason.

But we're not talking about a Bills win over the Raiders, because they're the Bills. Nope. Instead, the Bills lost to the Raiders, 26-24, and have been officially eliminated from post season contention. Week 17 will bring yet another utterly meaningless Foxboro finale for this franchise. Ready?

To be sure, the Bills had opportunities to eke out a win, despite the fact that they played like garbage throughout most of the afternoon. In fact, the Bills were trailing 19-17 with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, facing a 4th and 1 near midfield, but Doug Marrone opted to punt. (Of course he did.) Then, three minutes later, with Oakland facing a 3rd and 22, Buffalo's venerable pass defense was beaten deep by Andre Holmes for a psyche-crushing conversion. (Of course they did.) The Raiders went on to score, a last-gasp comeback attempt fell flat, and the Bills' season was caput.

Buffalo is 8-7. New England is 12-3, and if Denver wins on Monday Night Football, they'll be playing for home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs. They meet next weekend in a stadium that the Bills have never won in. Here comes .500 and the offseason.

If the Bills are going to keep their playoff hopes alive, they're going to need to win ugly today in Oakland. They trail at halftime.

If the Buffalo Bills are going to have a shot at the postseason next weekend, they're going to have to dig out an ugly, scrappy win over the Oakland Raiders this evening. Their play has been ugly thus far, but they only trail the Raiders 13-10 at halftime.

Things started out well enough, with Kyle Orton hitting Sammy Watkins for a 42-yard touchdown to give the Bills an early 7-0 lead. The defense was humming along as usual. But then Orton threw an interception to Charles Woodson, the Bills' defense gave up a big play over the top, and then the offense stalled as the Raiders built some momentum and took a 13-7 lead. A big part of that run: an injury to Marcell Dareus (he's out for the rest of the game), which allowed the Raiders to rack up some ground yardage.

Orton hit Watkins for a solid gain to set up a 54-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter to close out the half, and despite the ugly play, the Bills are still very much in this contest. Again: they need a win to have a shot at the postseason. Let's see if they play with that sense of urgency in the second half and pick up a much-needed win. They'll have the ball first. Go Bills!
